Advanced Materials − Research, Development & Applications
New materials are crucially important to humankind as a whole. Entire epochs have even been named after the principal materials in use at the time: e.g. the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. The University of Bayreuth's focus area Advanced Materials brings together more than 200 scientists pursuing research and development of new materials as well as new applications for modern materials.
Research activities include basic research, investigating materials and their properties, optimizing concrete applications, and manufacturing specially tailored materials. The focus area has been a part of the University of Bayreuth since at least 1999, when it was known under the title "Schwerpunkt Neue Materialien".
A broad spectrum
The focus area includes several chairs and working groups from the Faculty of Engineering Science along with selected chairs and scholars from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics & Computer Science, the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry & Earth Sciences, and the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry & Geophysics.
The University's focus area is also supported by a non-university research centre, New Materials Bayreuth GmbH (NMB). The staff of this company works together closely with the focus area Advanced Materials.
