Cooperation

A national and international network of partners

The scientists involved in the focus area Ecology & Environmental Sciences work together with a number of partners in research and teaching, both nationally and internationally. This research area has been a focus since the founding of the University in 1975 – Since those days of enjoying a leading role in Germany, an extensive alumni network has developed including institutions in academia and beyond.

Research cooperation is currently being carried out in international projects with Maseno University and  Moi University in Kenya (together with Africa Studies in Bayreuth), with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (working group Functional & Tropical Plant Ecology), and the Université de la Réunion (working group Animal Population Ecology).

A joint Professorship of Hydrological Modelling is being established together with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), and the teaching of the master's programme Global Change Ecology in the Elite Network of Bavaria is conducted together with the University of Würzburg and the University of Augsburg.

Intersections with other focus areas

Within the University, there are several intersections with other focus areas, for example Molecular Biosciences (master's programme Molecular Ecology), Polymer & Colloid Science (the effects of microplastics on the environment), Food & Health Sciences (sustainable food production), Energy Research & Energy Technology (sustainable cultivation of energy plants), and Governance & Responsibility (supplemental programme in Environmental Law). Many of our scientists are involved in multiple focus areas.

The Bayreuth Centre of Ecology & Environmental Research is a member of KUMAS - Environmental Competence Centre (Bavaria), the Süddeutsches Klimabüro, the Water Science Alliance, and the Förderverein Naturerbe Buchenwälder e.V.
